Jane Eyre, novel by Charlotte Brontë, published in 1847. Widely considered a classic, it gave new truthfulness to the Victorian novel with its realistic portrayal of the inner life of a woman, noting her struggles for her autonomy.
The novel follows the story of Jane, a seemingly plain and simple girl as she battles through life's struggles. Jane has many obstacles in her life - her cruel and abusive Aunt Reed, the grim conditions at Lowwood School and her love for Rochester which was threatened by a terrible secret in Rochester's past life.
The story is more than just a classic romance, though. It is the quest of a woman who is trying to find her place in an age when male dominance prevailed and females were submissive.
